HANHAM SURGERY INFORMATION  ON THE MMR VACCINE

As a result of continuing adverse media coverage on the MMR (Measles, Mumps & Rubella) vaccine, we have decided to confirm our advice:

  • The MMR vaccine is the safest way to protect children against measles, mumps and rubella (german measles)
  • Vaccination with MMR is very effective at preventing serious and occasionally fatal diseases

  • There is no evidence to support any link between the MMR and autism
  • Giving single vaccines delays protection against these diseases
  • We do not recommend the use of single vaccines and there is no evidence to show they are any safer. Indeed there are risks with giving six injections as opposed to two.
  • No country in the world supports the use of single vaccines

This advice is based on recommendations from the following groups:

  • Department of health
  • The Committee on Safety of Medicines
  • The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health
  • The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation
  • The World Health Organisation

For more detailed information discussing all the issues around the MMR immunisation, go to mmrthefacts

Hanham Surgery is a registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre. It currently costs £35 but this is likely to increase to £40 in the near future.

Here we offer the necessary vaccinations and advice for your safe travel abroad. We ask that before appointment you fill in a form at reception so that we can assess your needs. Most vaccines need to be given at least 2 weeks before travel and more complicated regimes can obviously take longer, therefore we ask for as much notice as possible prior to your holiday (preferably 6 weeks). Get some up to date information from the Fit for travel site another useful one is The medical Advisory Services for Travellers Abroad Limited site
